Day 4 - Christ the King
Our morning started at 5 AM with mass at 6 AM. Gianna and talk to you on the more slow to move. Matthew slept through mass and probably would've missed breakfast. After mass, we return to the rectory to have breakfast at 7:20. Morning seems to come a little early.
The program for this day was …

Day 15 – Fr. John’s Tanzania Mission Trip
Tuesday, Jan. 31 – Last full day in Tanzania
So much for sleeping until 5:00 a.m. At 3:45 this morning, I awoke rather warm and uncomfortable. I realized that my ceiling fan and a/c had stopped working, and it was pitch black and getting hot and sticky in my room. I got out of my bed, walk…
Day 14 – Fr. John’s Tanzania Mission Trip
Monday, Jan. 30
Once again I awoke before my alarm went off, this time at 5:00 a.m. I made my coffee, said a few prayers, and did some more journaling. When time came for me to start getting ready to leave, I checked for an Internet connection once again via Malaika’s Wi-Fi, hoping to be able…
Day 13 – Fr. John’s Tanzania Mission Trip
Sunday, Jan. 29
I awoke before my alarm went off at 6:00 a.m. this morning, made my coffee, said some prayers, did a short bit of journaling, brushed my teeth and, since it was Sunday and we were going to Mass, shaved. Then I showered and dressed. We had agreed last night to meet at 7:30 a.m.…
Day 12 – Fr. John’s Tanzania Mission Trip
Saturday, Jan. 28
I awoke just before my alarm went off at 5:00 a.m. this morning, and I turned down the volume on my iPhone, so that my alarm wouldn’t be too obnoxious to Scott. Scott was awake also, and he told me to feel free to shower first. I had asked yesterday when we checked in to hav…
Day 11 – Fr. John’s Tanzania Mission Trip
Friday, Jan. 27
My alarm went off at 4:00 a.m. this morning, and I said a quick morning prayer and made my usual large mug of coffee, using the hotel’s instant coffee, bottled hot water boiled in the hotel’s carafe on an extremely efficient hot-plate, my powdered Coffeemate French Vanilla cream…
Day 10 – Fr. John’s Tanzania Mission Trip
Thursday, Jan. 26
I awoke again before my alarm went off at 6:15 a.m. this morning. I made my coffee, said a few prayers, showered and finalized my packing. Our plan this morning was: (1) to visit the Geita Gold Mine, which has been a sponsor of the diocese’s orphanage for a long time; (2) to ha…
Day 9 - Fr. John's Tanzania Mission Trip
Wednesday, Jan. 25
Once again I woke up before my alarm went off. Made my coffee and said a few morning prayers, but not nearly as many as I say at home, due simply to time constraints in the mornings and exhaustion in the nightimes, which has been the case virtually every day. This has bothered me…

Day 5 – Fr. John’s Tanzania Mission Trip
Saturday, Jan. 21
Day 5 started for me around 6:00 a.m., a couple hours earlier than breakfast was scheduled at Bishop Flavian’s house, because I wanted to try to work on my journal before breakfast, which was scheduled for 8:00 or 8:30 a.m. I worked on it for a short while after saying some prayer…
Day 4 – Fr. John’s Tanzania Mission Trip
Friday, Jan. 20
Salome is the name of the young lady at Christ the King that I couldn’t recall yesterday when I wrote the journal for Day 3 of our mission trip. She was very sweet and helpful.
Day 4 started too early for me after getting to bed after midnight. We were to participate in the …
Day 3 of Fr. John's Tanzania Mission Trip-Salty
Thursday, Jan. 19
So Day 3 started leisurely. I awoke about 6:45 a.m. hoping to make some instant coffee with the coffee pot on a heating pad in my room, only to find that I couldn't get it to work. I later learned that none of the rest of crew could get them to work. Not a big problem, however, b/c…
